ESSEX COUNTY EXECUTIVE DIVINCENZO INVITES PUBLIC TO ATTEND ‘THE GREAT PIRATE INVASION’ AT ESSEX COUNTY KIP’S CASTLE PARK
Costumes, Mock Sword Fight and Scavenger Hunt
are part of Swashbuckling Fun Activities

Verona/Montclair, NJ – Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. invites families and members of the public to attend The Great Pirate Invasion at Essex County Kip’s Castle Park. The free event will be held as follows:

“The grand castle, manicured lawns and beautiful scenic location of Essex County Kip’s Castle Park provide a unique look into our past and the perfect backdrop for The Great Pirate Invasion. This exciting event will transport you back to the days of buried treasure, sword fights and high seas drama,” DiVincenzo said. “We invite you to come out for an afternoon of fun and adventure, and experience one of the jewels of the Essex County Park System,” he added.

Children and adults are encouraged to come dressed as pirates, shipmates or in other period costumes. There will be a staged sword fight, pirate-themed sing-a-long, arts and crafts table, souvenir shop and scavenger hunt. Watch for the pirate invasion at 1 p.m.!

ESSEX COUNTY EXECUTIVE DIVINCENZO ANNOUNCES EXCITING PROGRAMS SCHEDULED FOR THE MONTH OF MAY AT ESSEX COUNTY TURTLE BACK ZOO  

West Orange, NJ – Essex County’s Turtle Back Zoo offers a look at more than 80 different species of native and exotic animals from five different continents, and many exciting attractions and exhibits are constantly being added. Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. announced a variety of exciting programs being offered at the Essex County Turtle Back Zoo during the month of May that will teach visitors about the many different animals at the Zoo.  

“Essex County Turtle Back Zoo is an exciting, family-friendly environment. Our exotic animals captivate our visitors and our playground, train ride and soon-to-open carousel provides additional entertaining activities to enjoy,” DiVincenzo said. “The Zoo is a valuable asset to our community and we are proud to offer an exciting attraction that is teaching children and families to have an appreciation for animals as well as protecting and preserving exotic and endangered species,” he added. 

Events scheduled for May are as follows: “International Migratory Bird Day” will teach participants all there is to know about migratory birds and offer bird-themed arts and crafts in the Education Center. Cost is included with Zoo admission. International Migratory Bird Day will be held as follows:

“Bear Awareness Week” is a week-long event that highlights the importance of the bear in nature and the work being done to protect them. Cost is included with Zoo admission. Bear Awareness Week will be held as follows:

ESSEX SENIOR ARTISTS TO PARTICIPATE IN 31st ANNUAL ESSEX COUNTY SENIOR ART SHOW

Professional and Non-Professional Artists Are Encouraged to Submit Original Works in 11 Categories; Entry Deadline is Tuesday, June 3rd

Admission to the Senior Citizen Art Show is free. It will be held as follows:

“There is a thriving arts community in Essex County and our Senior Art Show enables our older residents, both professionals and non-professionals, to display their original creations where everyone can see them,” DiVincenzo said. “This is an excellent means for us to promote the arts and inspire our residents to use their talents. I encourage our seniors to submit their work and invite our residents to visit the Art Show,” he added.

Senior citizens must be at least 60 years old and a resident of Essex County to participate in the Art Show. Senior citizens with professional status must have sold their art through commercial channels, have had their work exhibited in a professional gallery or held professional membership in a guild or association. Seniors with non-professional status do not meet any of the above criteria.

Artwork must be the original creation of the artist, be completed within the last three years, and must be “show ready,” which means it should be matted, mounted and ready for hanging, using screw eyes only. Art cannot be larger than 38 inches and no smaller than 11 inches in any direction, and sculptures or 3-D crafts cannot exceed 18 inches in any dimension. Photographs taken by a digital camera should be entered in the Photography category. Art entered in previous Essex County Senior Art Shows cannot be re-entered in this year’s contest.

First and second place awards will be presented in the following categories, without exceptions: oil, acrylic, watercolor, print, pastel, drawing, mixed media, photography, digital imagery, sculpture or craft. First place winners will be eligible to participate in the State Senior Art Contest.

All artwork must be clearly labeled with the following information: the artist’s name, address, title of work, medium, date painted, size, professional or non-professional status, and approximate value of the painting, with the name of the insurance company if it is privately insured. The label should be securely attached to the back of the work. All entries must be delivered to the Essex County Environmental Center, 621B Eagle Rock Avenue, Roseland, NJ on Tuesday, June 3rd between 10 a.m. and 12 Noon.

The Essex County Park System was created in 1895 and is the first county park system established in the United States. The Park System consists of more than 6,000 acres and has 18 parks, five reservations, an environmental center, a zoo, ice skating rink, roller skating rink, three public golf courses, golf driving range, three off-leash dog facilities and a castle.
