Congresswoman Sherrill Names 2023 Heroes, Including Mayor Spango & Fire Chief Loveless

Sherrill

Late last week, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill announced 25 individuals within our congressional district who were being named as 2023 Heroes. Recipients were nominated by residents within the district and will receive a congressional certificate recognizing their contributions to their communities.

In Roseland, both Mayor James Spango and Fire Chief Richard Loveless were named as 2023 heroes, with Mayor Spango being nominated by Dave Veneri and Chief Loveless being nominated by Barry Bachenheimer.

“Jim Spango wears two hats in his service to the municipality as Mayor of Roseland and as Chief of the Essex County Sheriff’s Office. I've interacted with Jim Spango as the President of The Roseland Green HOA, and as a resident of Roseland, NJ. If I had questions, I got answers even on weekends and holidays. His dedication and follow through were second to none. Jim Spango has worked tirelessly, including weekends and holidays on the town and County’s behalf. Jim finds the time during his busy schedule for two other most important roles, husband and father of two wonderful girls. I could go on for several paragraphs as to his efforts and good deeds, but I'd actually be doing him a disservice. You see, the one thing that stood out to me over the years is that he refuses to point out his accomplishments. He would rather his hard work get noticed than having his wins spelled out. He works to rise above politics—his objective is to unite and serve the county and municipality of Roseland. Lastly, it's my hope that Chief/Mayor Spango continues his career in public service.”

“Rich Loveless, currently serving as Chief of the Roseland Volunteer Fire Department, embodies a legacy of community service. His father, Irv, a retired life member and former chief, and younger son Kevin, a former department member, reflect the family's commitment. Kathy, Rich's wife, actively contributes to the Ladies Auxiliary. Chief Loveless, integral to the department, has held various offices and is considered its heart and soul. Beyond commanding emergency calls and leading publicly, he works tirelessly behind the scenes. Managing service records, aiding older members, coordinating events, and supporting hospitalized members with gestures like flowers or fruit baskets, Chief Loveless is involved in every aspect. Notably, he quietly extends help to those facing illness in town, helping administer medications, delivering food, and assisting with daily tasks. His dedication mirrors the department's ethos of aiding others. Recently honored for 40 years of volunteer service, Chief Loveless continues to exemplify the Roseland Volunteer Fire Department's mission of helping others.”

The Borough congratulates Mayor Spango and Chief Loveless on their being named a 2023 Hero by Congresswoman Sherrill's office and we thank them for their service to the community!
