Wildlife Information

The Borough of Roseland contracts Animal Control services with the Township of West Orange

From time to time there are sightings of foxes, coyotes, raccoons, and other more dangerous animals within the Borough that can cause a health or safety hazard to people, pets, and possessions. Many of these animals are active during nighttime hours and will prey on small animals, so please be sure to not leave pets outside unattended.

If you see one of these animals, call the West Orange Health Department at 973-325-4120. If you think the animal is acting oddly, does not seem to show a fear of humans, or appears sickly, contact the Roseland Police Department at 973-226-8700.

You can help deter wildlife by:

  • Keeping garbage and recycling in covered containers
  • Use animal proof bird feeders
  • Do not feed birds or animals by placing bread or other food on the ground
  • Remove or invert containers from collecting water
  • Trim tree branches that are close to your home or other structures, especially the roof.
  • Maintain property to be free of weeds, high grass, and debris that could attract animals
  • Remove fallen fruit from trees
  • Do not leave pet food outside
  • Close in raised decks and porches and repair openings in structures to prevent harborage
  • Do not leave pets outside unattended
  • NEVER approach wildlife to feed or touch
