Bridge Deck Repairs Scheduled for I-280

I-280

The following is text from a letter received by Mayor Spango on March 13, 2024 from the New Jersey Department of Transportation that the Mayor wishes to make public so residents are aware about a construction project occurring within the Borough by the State DOT on two bridges on Interstate 280 that crosses the Passaic River:

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) office is sending this letter of notification regarding the bridge deck replacements including superstructure and substructure rehabilitation for the above mentioned two structures. Other major work includes guiderail upgrades and terrestrial chain- link fence along the Passaic River. Project will also cover scour counter measure work underneath the EB bridge in the Passaic River.

At present, the NJDOT is performing a limited scope final design phase, which will be completed by summer 2024. Based on the funding, it is anticipated to advertise and award the contract for construction by fall 2024 and anticipating construction completion by end of the year 2026.

NJDOT says that "No detour is needed during the construction phase, as we will keep both lanes for each direction of I-280 open during construction phase" and that "during construction-well in advance, a sign will be posted to follow Eisenhower Parkway exit". NJDOT states that "there is no reduction in number of lanes" that will occur during the construction.
